Nigeria, West Africa.
Nigeria gained independence from Britain in 1960.
It occupies a total landmass of about 923,768
square kilometres. It is bordered to the north
by Niger and Chad, to the south by the Cameroon
and the Atlantic Ocean, and to the west by Benin
and the Gulf of Guinea. Its climate is tropical,
with an average temperature of 860F or 300C. Its
capital is Abuja.
The country contains a varied terrain, ranging
from: savannah grassland, plateaux, highlands,
Sahara sands, flatlands, lowlands, lakes, rivers,
mangrove swamps, to rich dense tropical rain forest.
The forests and rivers contain: a wealth of wildlife,
including monkeys, snakes, a vast variety of birds,
multiple insects and butterflies, elephants, antelope,
hippopotamuses, crocodiles, leopards, boars, rabbits,
porcupine, ostrich, guinea fowl, pythons, wild
cattle and horses, and a variety of reptiles;
along with palms, baobab, iroko, cotton, mahogany,
ebony, acacia, and a large variety of other trees.
The economy is dominated by crude oil and petroleum,
along with industry and agriculture, for domestic
and export purposes. It is the largest oil producer
in Africa, and amongst the six largest producers
in the world, with a reserve of over 20 billion
barrels. It is a leading member of the Organisation
of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Nigeria
is rich in mineral and resource deposits, including:
uranium, gold, coal, diamond and other precious
stones, iron-ore, lead, zinc, tin, magnesium,
niobium, and it is the leading producer of columbite
in the world.
Rice, cassava, yams, cocoyams, sweet potatoes,
sorghum, millet, beans, corn, peanuts, cocoa,
plantains, palm oil and kernel, kolanuts, a variety
of fruits, vegetables and herbs, goats, sheep,
cattle and other livestock, fish, prawns and sea
foods are farmed for domestic and export purposes.
Its industries include: drinks, textiles, cement
and bricks, food, timber, aluminium, leather,
plants; along with coal, diamond, and gold mining;
also crude oil exploration and refinery. Crude
oil and petroleum products constitute its principal
exports.
