Your holiday might not be complete
if you forget to visit the famous James Island.
You can get to this historic Island by a special
boat ride, which normally should not cost you
more than D200(£i2) for a return journey.
You can also decide to leave the
Kombos and Banjul areas by discovering other villages
surrounding the Kombos. Villages like Tanji, Gunjur
and Brufut will not cost more than D30(£2) for
such trips.
It is also possible for you to travel
to neighbouring Senegal from the Gambia by road.
All you have to do is to join a bus for Banjul
(if you are in the Kombos) and then taxi, on arrival
in Banjul, to the harbour where a ferry that ply
between the capital, Banjul and the border town,
Barra comes every other hour. The ferry fare is
D5. From Barra to Dakar is about six hours journey
and should cost about D75($7.5) or its equivalent
of the Senegalese currency(CFA francs).
In most cases, holiday makers wishing
to go beyond the corridors of the Gambia are normally
advised to consult with the security authorities
and the tour operators who will normally advice
on the situation at the border point. You can
also consult with your Embassy or High Commission
in cases like this.
Gambia is known today as the most
peaceful and stable country in the West African
Sub-region. Holidaying here will be worth the
experience. As the locals always say "Come
to Gambia and have the Gambia Experience".
