Gambia Tourist Guide: Places To Visit: Bakau
One interesting part of the Kombos is the Bakau area where nearly
every resident knows of a Crocodile reserve
in the Cathcaly area. At the pool is the oldest
living Crocodile in the Gambia called "Charlie".
It has become so popular over the years that
its popularity rating can only be compared to
that of Senegalese-born musical star, Youssu N'dour,
whose music is a household thing in the Gambia.
A lot of tourist spots abound here for holidaymakers.
This includes the African Village Hotel along
Atlantic road and Cape Point road. There is
also the Bakau beach where those who love sun
bathing go to have a good time. This area is
also popular because it leads to some prominent
hotels like Cape Point hotel, Marietta Beach
Hotel etc. And like you have in other parts
of the Combo area, there are telephone centres,
a market, banks, supermarkets and just recently,
a modern post office.
Thereby is a central taxi station from Bakau
to Serrekunda where you see other taxis with
drivers signalling to you their various destinations.
The taxi fare within the Kombos is fixed at
D2 (two dalasis) except when you decide to go
on charter known in the Gambia as "town
trip".Then its negotiable.
Tourist areas are not difficult to find out
once you get into the country. You might choose
to begin your pleasure trip from the Fajara
beach, which is another popular spot in the
country. At Fajara beach, the tourists are not
alone here. The locals, students and new lovers
also answer to the natural call here by frequenting
this beach for sightseeing and cooling off.
Fajara beach plays host to music lovers with
its standby music set that makes going to the
place hard to resist. At this beach you will
find also supermarkets, a bank, bureau de'change,
restaurants
and of course the popular Bungalow Beach hotel
commonly called "BB" hotel. Like in
most tourist areas, there is also a craft market
in this area.
This area used to be notorious for "bumsters"
but is now much better.
