Investing Outside the Free Zones

Investments outside the Free Zones are classified into General, and Special Investments.

General Investment Status

Investors with General Investment status will not be eligible for special incentives, since they will do business in non-priority areas and/or will invest amounts less than one hundred thousand dollars. Investors under this status can get advice and information from GIPFZA. This status covers all other investments that do not qualify for the agency's special Incentive Package. The minimum requirement for eligibility to invest in The Gambia is that the business be registered with the registrar of companies.

Special Investment Status

In order to benefit from this special investment incentive, investors must:

  • Establish a company or partnership under the laws of The Gambia
  • Invest in the domestic economy(outside the Free Zones),
  • Invest in identified priority sectors
  • Invest in fixed assets of at least One Hundred Thousand United States Dollars or its equivalent
Investors who qualify for Special Investment Status will be entitled to the following incentives for a period of five years
  • Exemption from withholding tax and tax on dividends
  • Exemption from customs duties on the following items
    • The approved capital equipment, machinery, appliances, furniture and fittings imported and to be used by the project or business;
    • The approved quantities of semi-finished products, spare parts, raw materials and other supplies to be used in the production process;
  • Exemption from sales tax on the above mentioned imported good;
  • Exemption from turnover tax
  • Assistance in the allocation of land for the site of the proposed investment
  • Special and attractive scheme of accelerated depreciation for the first 10 years. Buildings are depreciated 10% annually, while plants and fittings are depreciated 20% annually.
  • Other facilities will be depreciated, on cost basis, 20% annually.
